Safe Access to School is our Priority
Project Overview and Summary The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has funded the review of all elementary, middle and high schools within Sumter and Lake Counties. This report includes Phase 1 of the Safe School Access Transportation Study authorized by the Lake~Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (Lake~Sumter MPO) as part of its efforts to provide regional coordination and planning for all modes of transportation.
Goals
- To analyze transportation access to school and provide recommendations for improvement.
- To encourage continued coordination among agencies that impact students who walk or bicycle to and from school.
- To provide project ideas for future funding opportunities.
Background A safe sidewalk network is needed to support the walk zone areas of schools. Phase 1 of this Study makes recommendations for bicycle, pedestrian, bus and vehicle transportation access for eleven public schools in Sumter County and five schools in the Eustis area of Lake County. Phase 2 and 3 will involve reviewing the remaining number of schools in Lake County.
